ICOHR CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE ON GREECE BOAT DISASTER

I as the Chairman of the International Commission on Human Rights (ICOHR), would like to extend our deepest condolences for the devastating loss of life resulting from the recent boat accident in Greece waters. It is with great sadness that we learned about the incident, which claimed the lives of numerous individuals who were seeking a better future for themselves and their families.

The International Commission on Human Rights expresses profound sympathy for the victims and their families who are now mourning this unimaginable tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. We understand the immense pain and sorrow that accompanies such a devastating event, and we stand in solidarity with all those affected by this unfortunate incident.

The ICOHR acknowledges the efforts undertaken by the Government of Greece in dealing with the challenges posed by illegal immigration. But the role of Greek Coast Guards in this accident has a big humanitarian question mark. We recognize the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals, while also addressing the underlying causes that drive migration. It is in this spirit that the International Commission on Human Rights is seeking to collaborate with the Government of Greece to establish a mechanism aimed at preventing illegal attempts of immigration, particularly those originating from Pakistan.

We believe that a comprehensive approach, focused on addressing the root causes of migration and providing alternative avenues for safe and legal migration, is essential in preventing further loss of life and ensuring the protection of human rights. By fostering dialogue and cooperation between relevant stakeholders, including governments, civil society organizations, and international bodies, we can work towards sustainable solutions that uphold human dignity and respect for all.

International Commission on Human Rights remain committed to supporting initiatives that prioritize the protection of individuals’ rights, irrespective of their nationality or migratory status. We believe that through joint efforts, we can develop strategies that not only address the immediate challenges but also pave the way for long-term solutions that are just and equitable.
Once again, please accept our heartfelt condolences for the tragedy that has unfolded. May the departed souls find eternal peace, and may their families find strength and solace during this trying time.

With deepest sympathy,

Aslam Ellahi
Chairman
International Commission on Human Rights
