Gaza: A struggle to keep young hopes alive amid shattered dreams

The Deir Al-Balah Preparatory School, part of UNRWA’s network of 700 schools for Palestine refugees, now hosts a multitude of tents, replacing the once vibrant yard and classrooms where children enjoyed sports and play. Ayman Ibrahim Jouda, formerly a mathematics teacher, now assists displaced individuals, while Abdulrahman al-Shami, another educator, longs for a return to normalcy amidst the ongoing strife. Despite facing immense challenges, the children I interviewed expressed aspirations for the future, despite residing in harsh conditions with scarce access to essential resources. Meanwhile, at the Tel Al-Sultan Clinic in Rafah, pharmacist Sulafa Abu Hilal organizes events aimed at providing emotional support to children affected by the conflict, underscoring their right to play and seek comfort amid adversity. Similar initiatives are being organized throughout Rafah, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the prevailing darkness of war.
