UN Security Council Urges Enhanced Support to Combat the Lord’s Resistance Army

The UN Security Council issued a presidential statement urging enhanced support for the implementation of the UN Regional Strategy against the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Central Africa. It emphasized the need for a comprehensive regional approach and commended the African Union’s efforts, while urging regional governments to fulfill their commitments. The Council expressed concern about the security vacuum in the Central African Republic and called for stronger coordination among UN missions, regional forces, and peacekeeping operations to protect civilians and counter LRA activities effectively. It also encouraged MONUSCO and UNMISS to reinforce cooperation with the Regional Task Force and address imminent threats to civilians. Additionally, the Council highlighted reports of an LRA base in a disputed enclave, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to address the LRA threat in the region.
