UN Rights Experts Condemn Continued Operation of Guantánamo Bay Detention Facility

A group of independent UN human rights experts condemned the continued operation of the Guantánamo Bay detention facility in Cuba, labeling it a site of “unparalleled notoriety” and a stain on the US commitment to the rule of law. Despite forceful condemnation, the facility remains open, housing 39 detainees, most without trial. The experts called for its closure, citing two decades of arbitrary detention, torture, and lack of accountability. They criticized delays in legal proceedings and inadequate medical care for aging detainees. The experts urged the US to repatriate detainees, provide reparations for torture victims, and hold accountable those responsible for authorizing and engaging in torture. They highlighted failures in the US judicial system and praised lawyers defending detainees’ rights.
