The Convention on the Rights of the Child is built upon four fundamental principles that guide all children's rights work.
Every child is entitled to their rights without discrimination of any kind, regardless of race, color, sex, language, religion, national or social origin, property, disability, birth, or other status.
The best interests of the child must be a primary consideration in all actions concerning children, whether undertaken by public or private social welfare institutions, courts, administrative authorities, or legislative bodies.
Every child has the inherent right to life, and states must ensure to the maximum extent possible the survival and development of the child, including physical, mental, spiritual, moral, and social development.
Children who are capable of forming their own views have the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting them, with their views being given due weight in accordance with their age and maturity.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989, is the most comprehensive human rights treaty addressing children's rights. With near-universal ratification, it establishes universal standards for children's rights protection, covering civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. ICOHR works to ensure full implementation of the CRC and related international instruments at all levels.
